The Nigerian Navy has handed over 19 bags of substances suspected to be Cannabis Sativa to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Anambra State for further investigation.

The items were recovered by personnel of the Naval Outpost, Onitsha, during intelligence-led operations in Atani Community, Ogbaru Local Government Area of the state.

The Commanding Officer of the Naval Outpost, Kabir Yusuf, said the recovery followed a routine patrol by personnel of the Forward Operating Base, Amiyi, in the Atani Abo Community.

According to him, the patrol team noticed a vehicle suspected of transporting the illicit substances and pursued it. The suspect reportedly abandoned the vehicle and fled from the scene.

Yusuf said a subsequent operation led security personnel to a warehouse allegedly being used to store illicit substances. A search of the facility resulted in the recovery of additional suspected Cannabis Sativa, bringing the total number of recovered bags to 19.

The naval commander said the operation demonstrated the vigilance and readiness of personnel to combat the movement of illicit substances within the command’s area of responsibility.

The recovered items were formally transferred to the NDLEA Onitsha Unit for further investigation and necessary action.

The Navy also requested that the NDLEA provide an update on the outcome of its investigation after the process is concluded.
