Real Madrid has opened internal disciplinary proceedings against defender Raúl Asencio following his recent conviction for driving under the influence of alcohol.
The club’s decision comes after a Spanish court ordered the 23-year-old to pay a €14,400 fine and suspended his driving licence for eight months following the incident in Gran Canaria.
Real Madrid considers the conduct a serious matter because it believes the incident could damage the image and reputation of the club. The disciplinary process will determine the appropriate internal sanction under the club’s regulations.
The matter was confirmed by Real Madrid manager José Mourinho, who said Asencio remains a Real Madrid player while the disciplinary process is ongoing.
Mourinho acknowledged the defender’s professionalism on the training ground but stressed that players have responsibilities away from football because their conduct can also affect the reputation of the club.
Asencio has not featured for Real Madrid this season because of a muscle injury and is expected to remain sidelined for several weeks.
The defender is also involved in a separate legal case dating back to 2023, although that matter is unrelated to the driving conviction.
Real Madrid is expected to decide on the appropriate disciplinary measure after completing its internal review.
