The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has warned mining operators against violating the laws governing mining activities, stressing that ignorance of the law will not shield anyone from sanctions.
The warning forms part of the Corps’ renewed efforts to strengthen enforcement against illegal mining and ensure that operators comply with relevant regulations.
The NSCDC urged miners and other stakeholders in the sector to obtain the necessary approvals and operate within the provisions of the law.
The Corps also stressed the importance of proper coordination among security agencies and relevant government authorities in tackling illegal mining, particularly in areas where unlawful activities could threaten communities and the environment.
The warning comes amid growing concerns over the impact of illegal mining across the country, including environmental degradation, insecurity and the loss of government revenue.
The NSCDC said its personnel would continue to monitor mining activities and take appropriate action against operators found to be acting outside the law.
It further called on members of the public to support enforcement efforts by providing useful information about suspected illegal mining activities to the appropriate authorities.
The Corps reiterated that compliance with existing laws remains mandatory for all mining operators, regardless of their level of awareness of the applicable regulations.
