The Federal Government has introduced new regulations requiring manufacturers, importers, brand owners, recyclers and other businesses involved in the plastics industry to take responsibility for the waste generated by their products.
The measure is contained in the National Environmental (Plastic Waste Control) Regulations 2026, unveiled in Abuja by the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal.
The new regulations are designed to strengthen Nigeria’s efforts to control plastic pollution by making businesses more accountable for the environmental impact of the plastic products they produce, import or distribute.
Under the framework, operators across the plastics value chain are expected to play a greater role in the collection, recovery, recycling and proper management of plastic waste.
The Federal Government said the policy is intended to promote a more sustainable approach to plastic production and consumption while reducing the amount of plastic waste that ends up in the environment.
The initiative also seeks to encourage recycling and the development of a stronger circular economy, in which materials are recovered and reused rather than discarded after a single use.
The government is expected to work with relevant stakeholders in implementing the regulations and strengthening systems for managing plastic waste across the country.
The introduction of the new rules represents another step in the Federal Government’s efforts to address the environmental challenges associated with plastic pollution and promote responsible practices within the plastics sector.
