Coco Gauff produced a remarkable comeback against Mirra Andreeva to secure her place in the semifinals of the 2026 US Open.
The American fourth seed recovered from a poor start to defeat the fifth-seeded Russian 2–6, 7–6(7), 6–2 in a tense quarterfinal encounter.
Andreeva dominated the opening set, putting Gauff under pressure with aggressive and accurate shot-making. Gauff struggled to find her rhythm and quickly fell behind as the Russian took the first set.
The contest changed dramatically in the second set. Gauff regained her composure and eventually forced a tiebreak, where she found herself in serious danger of elimination after Andreeva earned two match points.
However, the 22-year-old American refused to give up. She saved both match points before taking the set and forcing the contest into a decider.
Gauff then took control in the final set, breaking Andreeva’s serve and maintaining her momentum to complete the comeback and seal her place in the last four.
The victory sets up a semifinal clash with Elena Rybakina, who defeated Zheng Qinwen earlier in the quarterfinals and moved to the top of the women’s world rankings. Gauff and Rybakina have split their previous meetings, making their upcoming encounter an intriguing battle.
Gauff’s resilience was ultimately the difference as she survived a major scare to keep her hopes of winning another US Open title alive.
