Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has admitted that he was “very, very sad” after being informed that the club was not ready to offer him a new contract.
The Argentina international still has two years remaining on his current Liverpool deal, but he revealed that he had been hoping for an extension after seeing teammates Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai receive new contracts.
Mac Allister said the decision was difficult to accept, particularly because of the strong relationship he has developed with the club since joining from Brighton in 2023.
The 27-year-old explained that there had been no direct discussion between him and Liverpool over the matter, with his agent communicating with the club instead.
Despite his disappointment, Mac Allister insisted that he remains fully committed to Liverpool and will continue giving his best for the team.
He also confirmed that he had opportunities to leave during the summer transfer window but chose to remain at Anfield because of his love for the club and belief in what the team can achieve.
Mac Allister acknowledged that his performances could influence Liverpool’s decision in the future, saying he would focus on showing the level he is capable of producing.
Since arriving at Liverpool, the midfielder has helped the club win the Premier League and Carabao Cup. He also said he remains excited about working under new manager Andoni Iraola and believes the team has the quality and mentality to enjoy a successful campaign.
Iraola, meanwhile, played down concerns surrounding the contract situation, saying he values Mac Allister highly and believes there is still plenty of time for discussions over his future.
For now, Mac Allister appears determined to concentrate on football while leaving the door open for Liverpool to reconsider his contract situation in the future.
