Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has been honoured with a traditional chieftaincy title during her visit to Imo State.

The First Lady was conferred with the title “Oso Di Eme I” at a ceremony in the state on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.

The honour adds to the growing list of traditional recognitions bestowed on prominent Nigerians and public figures by communities across the country.

Oluremi Tinubu, who served as senator representing Lagos Central before becoming First Lady, has remained involved in several government-backed initiatives focused on women, children, education and social welfare.

Her visit to Imo also provided an opportunity for engagement with residents and traditional stakeholders in the state.

The presentation of the chieftaincy title reflects the important role traditional institutions continue to play in recognising individuals considered to have made contributions to society or maintained connections with particular communities.

The title, Oso Di Eme I, was formally presented to the First Lady during the ceremony, where she was received by traditional and community stakeholders.

The development also generated attention on social media, with images and videos from the ceremony showing the First Lady in traditional attire as she received the honour.

Chieftaincy titles remain an important part of Nigeria’s cultural landscape, with traditional rulers and communities frequently using such honours to recognise public officials, philanthropists, business leaders and other prominent personalities.

For Mrs Tinubu, the Imo recognition represents another traditional honour received in her capacity as First Lady and public figure.

The ceremony also underscores the continued interaction between Nigeria’s political leadership and traditional institutions, particularly during official visits and community engagements.

As the First Lady continues her nationwide activities, such engagements provide opportunities for interaction with local leaders and communities while also highlighting the cultural diversity of the country.

The Imo ceremony ended with Mrs Tinubu formally bearing the new traditional title, Oso Di Eme I, following the conferment by her hosts.
