Waardah produced a strong performance at Doncaster to win the Betfred Park Hill Fillies’ Stakes, giving trainer Owen Burrows and jockey Callum Rodriguez a major success on the opening day of the St Leger Festival.
The five-year-old benefited from first-time use of a hood and showed her stamina to defeat Danielle by a length and three-quarters, with front-runner Consent finishing behind them.
Waardah Finds Her Best Form
Waardah had struggled to build momentum during the summer, largely because she prefers softer conditions underfoot.
However, with more suitable ground at Doncaster and the addition of the hood, she appeared much more settled during the race.
Consent attempted to control the contest from the front, but Waardah gradually closed the gap before taking charge in the closing stages. She pulled clear of Danielle to secure another Group Two victory.
The win added to her previous Group Two success in the Lillie Langtry Stakes at Goodwood last season.
First-Time Hood Makes the Difference
Burrows credited the new headgear with helping Waardah settle during the race.
The trainer explained that the filly can be difficult to manage at home but had shown improved concentration with the hood. Once she found her rhythm, Burrows felt confident about her chances.
Rodriguez was equally pleased with the performance, praising Waardah’s ability to handle the ground and maintain her effort all the way to the finish.
He said the race developed perfectly for her, with an even pace and Doncaster’s long straight allowing her stamina to come into play.
Group One Targets Now Under Consideration
Waardah’s impressive victory could lead to an ambitious finish to her season.
Burrows revealed that the Prix de Royallieu at ParisLongchamp and Champions Day at Ascot are both being considered.
The trainer also suggested that Waardah could be nearing the end of her racing career, with a potential move into breeding after this season.
Night In Vegas Also Shines
There was plenty more action on the opening day of the St Leger Festival.
Night In Vegas claimed the Weatherbys £300,000 2-Y-O Stakes, with Charlie Bishop producing a well-timed ride on the heavily backed favourite.
The Eve Johnson Houghton-trained youngster travelled smoothly before hitting the front inside the final furlong and holding on to win by half a length.
The victory followed his recent success at Newmarket and continued an encouraging season that has already included placed finishes in the Coventry and Vintage Stakes.
Speed Of Sound Makes Flying Start
Saffie Osborne also enjoyed an excellent start to the festival, guiding Speed Of Sound to victory in the opening British Stallion Studs ‘Carrie Red’ EBF Fillies’ Nursery Handicap.
The 7-4 favourite dictated the race from the front and eventually finished a length and three-quarters ahead of her closest challengers.
Osborne was particularly impressed with the filly’s professionalism, while trainer Richard Spencer suggested she could progress further and potentially step up to seven furlongs.
A Strong Opening Day at Doncaster
Waardah’s Park Hill triumph provided the headline moment, but victories for Night In Vegas and Speed Of Sound ensured an exciting start to the 2026 St Leger Festival.
With Waardah now potentially heading towards another Group One challenge, her performance at Doncaster could prove to be one of the defining moments of her season.
