Troops of the Nigerian Army have arrested a suspected kidnapper during an operation along the Benin-Sapele Road in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State.
The suspect, identified as Olamide Oyeniyi, was apprehended on September 12 at Obaretin Community by troops of the 4 Brigade Nigerian Army operating under Operation WABAIZIGAN.
According to the Army, the operation was aimed at disrupting criminal activities and strengthening security along major transportation routes in the area.
During the operation, troops recovered an AK-47 rifle, one magazine and eight rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition from the suspect.
Other items found in his possession included a Tecno mobile phone, two bags, a torchlight, a music box and assorted charms.
The suspect and the recovered items have been taken into military custody as investigations continue.
The Army said investigators are working to establish whether Oyeniyi has links to other criminal elements and determine his possible involvement in kidnapping and related offences along the Benin-Sapele corridor.
The Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 4 Brigade, Kennedy Anyanwu, said the military would continue operations aimed at denying criminal elements freedom of action and protecting communities and major transportation routes in Edo State.
The latest arrest comes as security agencies intensify operations against kidnapping and other violent crimes along major highways in the state.
The suspect remains in custody pending further investigation, and allegations against him have not been established in court.
