The Chairman of Ukwuani Local Government Council in Delta State, Chiamaka Ajede, has rejected claims that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori ordered the arrest, detention or removal of councillor Chukwuemeka Victor Kenneth.
Ajede made the clarification while responding to a video circulating on social media alleging that the state government had imprisoned the councillor and removed him from office.
According to the council chairman, Kenneth remains a serving councillor but was suspended by his colleagues over an alleged breach of the council’s code of conduct.
He explained that the councillor’s detention was instead connected to a criminal case initiated by the police and currently before the Federal High Court in Asaba.
Ajede said the case stemmed from comments allegedly made by Kenneth during a live television programme on June 21, 2026. The matter was subsequently reported to the police, who investigated the allegations before filing charges against him.
The chairman said Kenneth pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to him and later applied for bail. However, the court reportedly adjourned proceedings after requesting that the video containing the alleged statements be played before it could determine the bail application.
As a result, Kenneth remained in custody pending the court’s decision.
Ajede stressed that the councillor’s suspension and his detention were two separate matters, insisting that neither was ordered by Governor Oborevwori.
“Sheriff did not imprison him,” the chairman said, adding that Kenneth was still a sitting councillor despite his suspension.
The council boss urged members of the public to disregard claims linking the governor directly to the councillor’s detention or alleged removal from office.
He maintained that the suspension was an internal decision taken by members of the council, while the detention resulted from the ongoing criminal proceedings.
The clarification comes amid growing discussion on social media over the councillor’s status and the circumstances surrounding his detention. The case remains before the court.
