The Ondo State Government has introduced new restrictions on commercial motorcycle operations in parts of Akure, the state capital, as authorities intensify efforts to improve traffic flow and enforce road safety regulations.
The restriction particularly affects the Government House axis in Alagbaka, where commercial motorcycle operators, popularly known as Okada riders, have been barred from accessing certain routes.
The Special Adviser to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on Transportation, Olumuyiwa Ogunyemi, announced the measures during a media interaction with journalists at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre in Akure.
According to Ogunyemi, Okada riders approaching the area from the Police Officers’ Mess route will only be permitted to operate up to designated points, while those coming through the First Bank area in Alagbaka are required to terminate their operations around the Teaching Service Commission axis.
Commercial motorcycles and tricycles operating around the Post Office area have also been directed to relocate under the new traffic arrangements.
The government said the measures are part of broader efforts to address traffic congestion and improve movement within Akure, particularly as major infrastructure projects, including the ongoing flyover construction, alter traffic patterns in the city.
Ogunyemi warned that motorists, Okada riders, tricycle operators and other road users who violate traffic regulations would face arrest and prosecution.
He specifically raised concerns about commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators allegedly ignoring traffic lights and proceeding before the signal turns green.
The government also warned against the illegal use of designated bus stops, road shoulders and other public spaces for trading, workshops and parking.
According to the transportation adviser, designated bus stops must be used for their intended purpose, while the conversion of sections of roads into commercial spaces would no longer be tolerated.
The state government is also planning to strengthen road safety infrastructure in Akure, including the installation of zebra crossings and speed-limit signs, particularly around schools and other locations considered vulnerable to accidents.
Ogunyemi urged residents, motorists and commercial transport operators to cooperate with the government and comply with traffic regulations as enforcement is intensified.
The government said the objective of the new measures is to improve traffic management, enhance road safety and ensure smoother movement of people and vehicles across Akure.
