Nollywood has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran Nigerian actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs.

The celebrated actor died on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at the age of 84. His passing was confirmed by members of his family, who described him as the “Lion of Lufodo” in a statement announcing his death.

Born on July 11, 1942, Olu Jacobs built a remarkable career spanning theatre, television and film. He received professional acting training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London before appearing in British television productions and international films.

After returning to Nigeria, Jacobs became one of the most recognisable faces in the Nigerian film industry. He was particularly known for portraying authoritative characters such as kings, traditional rulers, chiefs and family patriarchs.

Beyond acting, Jacobs and his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, were involved in the Lufodo Group and the development of performing arts education through the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts.

Throughout his career, he received several honours, including the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2007. In 2011, the Nigerian government also conferred on him the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).

His death marks the end of a remarkable era for one of Nigeria’s most respected acting veterans. The family has appealed to bloggers and social media users to respect their privacy as they mourn his passing.
