Lionel Messi added another remarkable milestone to his career on Sunday after scoring for Inter Miami in their 2-2 draw with San Diego FC in Major League Soccer.
The Argentine forward curled home a superb free-kick in the 24th minute to bring Inter Miami level after Anders Dreyer had given San Diego an early lead. The strike took Messi’s career tally to 930 official goals.
Messi’s effort was his 75th career direct free-kick goal, while it also marked his 101st goal for Inter Miami, just four days after he reached the 100-goal landmark for the club in the Campeones Cup victory over Cruz Azul.
The 39-year-old’s latest achievement has renewed comparisons with Cristiano Ronaldo, who remains ahead in the race towards 1,000 career goals. Messi became the second player to reach 900 official career goals earlier this year, following Ronaldo’s achievement.
Beyond the career milestone, Messi’s latest MLS goal also placed him in another exclusive category. His strike against San Diego was his 20th league goal of the 2026 season, making him only the second player in MLS history to score at least 20 goals in three consecutive seasons, joining Denis Bouanga.
Inter Miami eventually took the lead when Luis Suárez scored in the 74th minute, but San Diego refused to leave empty-handed. Dreyer completed his brace eight minutes later to secure a point for the visitors.
The draw extended Inter Miami’s run to four consecutive MLS draws. The club now has 12 wins, four defeats and 10 draws from its 26 league matches, giving it 46 points.
Messi, meanwhile, continues to add to his extraordinary numbers in the United States. His 101 goals for Inter Miami have come in 116 appearances across all competitions, with the club having already lifted four trophies since his arrival in 2023.
