Public Servants Begin Three-Day Nationwide Warning Strike

Public servants across Nigeria have commenced a three-day nationwide warning strike following the directive of the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC).

The industrial action began on Friday, October 2, 2026, and is expected to run until Sunday, October 4, affecting workers across the federal, state and local government levels.

The workers are protesting what they describe as worsening economic hardship and are demanding urgent measures to reduce the pressure on public servants and other Nigerians.

Among their key demands are a reduction in the price of petrol to ₦500 per litre, an immediate wage award for public workers and negotiations towards a new national minimum wage.

The council had reportedly given the Federal Government a deadline of September 30 to respond to its demands. Following what the workers considered an inadequate response, the council directed its members to proceed with the warning strike.

The action could affect the operations of government ministries, departments and agencies, as well as some services at state and local government levels.

However, the current action is a warning strike, with the announced three-day period scheduled to end on Sunday.

The development comes amid continued concerns over the rising cost of living and the purchasing power of workers across the country.
