Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called on Nigerians to put aside ethnic and religious divisions, arguing that the country’s economic and security challenges affect citizens across all backgrounds.

Obi made the remarks during a virtual meeting with supporters ahead of the 2027 general election. He said Nigerians were being divided along ethnic and religious lines even though hardship does not discriminate.

According to him, no tribe or religion enjoys cheaper food or fuel, while poverty and insecurity remain widespread across the country.

“No tribe buys bread cheaper. No tribe buys food cheaper. No religion buys bread cheaper. No religion buys food cheaper.”

The former Anambra State governor also expressed concern over the security situation in the country, citing the reported abduction of 22 graduates travelling for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.

He questioned why security agencies had been unable to locate and rescue kidnapped Nigerians despite the availability of modern technology and intelligence capabilities.

Obi said Nigeria needs leadership capable of bringing citizens together while confronting insecurity directly.

“We need a president that will unite us. We need a president that will work tirelessly to secure this country,” he said.

He also called for better equipment, logistics and welfare for security personnel and their families, stressing that those tasked with protecting Nigerians must be adequately supported.

On the 2027 election, Obi urged voters to remain at their polling units after casting their ballots until votes are counted, emphasising the importance of protecting the electoral process.

The former governor maintained that Nigeria’s challenges require collective action rather than further ethnic or religious division.
