One person has died and four suspects have been arrested following a violent clash between farmers and herders in Guda Village, Ningi Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

The deceased, identified as 40-year-old Usman Jibrin, reportedly died while receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the incident, according to the Bauchi State Police Command.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, disclosed the development in a statement on Friday, explaining that the clash occurred on September 23, 2026.

According to the police, three farmers from Guda Village went to their farms on Guda Hill and discovered that cattle belonging to a herder were grazing on and destroying their crops.

The farmers reportedly drove the cattle towards the herders’ settlement, where an argument broke out and escalated into a fight, leaving the three farmers injured.

The situation later deteriorated when some youths from Guda Village allegedly mobilised in retaliation and set houses in the herders’ settlement on fire.

Police operatives from the Ningi Division responded to the incident, restored order and evacuated the injured to the General Hospital in Ningi for medical attention. However, Jibrin later died while receiving treatment.

Following intelligence-led operations, the police arrested four suspects on October 8 in connection with alleged criminal conspiracy, causing grievous hurt, arson and culpable homicide.

The suspects have been directed to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Bauchi for further investigation.

The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, expressed condolences to the deceased’s family and those whose properties were destroyed, assuring residents that the authorities would pursue justice.

He also urged communities to embrace dialogue and peaceful coexistence, particularly between farmers and herders, to prevent similar incidents.

The clash highlights the continuing tensions that can arise when livestock damage crops, sometimes escalating into violence, destruction of property and loss of life.
