The Nigeria Police Force has cautioned churchgoers against publicly disclosing personal achievements and financial progress during testimonies, following the foiling of an alleged kidnapping plot targeting a female cleric in Abuja.
The warning came after four church members were arrested over an alleged plan to abduct Prophetess Elizabeth, who was reportedly targeted after sharing a testimony about her achievements.
According to The PUNCH, Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Intelligence Response Team, Adamu Muazu, gave the warning on Thursday while parading the suspects.
Muazu disclosed that the alleged kidnapping was planned to take place after an evening church service, raising concerns about the safety of worshippers, particularly those attending services that end late at night.
He advised church members to exercise caution when sharing personal information in public gatherings, warning that not everyone within a congregation necessarily has good intentions.
The police officer said worshippers should be mindful of revealing details about their financial progress or other achievements in settings where such information could be exploited by criminals.
He also urged church leaders, especially those operating in isolated locations, to strengthen security arrangements and take responsibility for the safety of their members.
Muazu emphasised the need for churches holding evening services to assess the security of access roads, entrances and exits, as well as the routes worshippers use when returning home.
The police officer expressed concern that some of the suspects allegedly had close connections with the intended victim and the church leadership.
“Surprisingly, this happened to be her driver, who worked with her. And the second suspect is a bodyguard to the head church pastor. They are all members of the same church,” he said.
The incident has highlighted concerns about the possibility of personal information being exploited by individuals who have access to worshippers through close professional or religious relationships.
The police urged religious leaders and congregations to remain vigilant and adopt stronger security measures to reduce the risk of criminal attacks.
