MTN Nigeria subscribers have expressed frustration over hours of network disruption that affected parts of the country, with some customers demanding compensation for losses they said they suffered during the outage.

The disruption occurred on Thursday, October 8, 2026, affecting customers in parts of Lagos, Oyo, Rivers and Delta states, as well as the Federal Capital Territory.

Subscribers took to social media to complain about difficulties accessing mobile internet services, making calls and carrying out activities that depend on reliable connectivity.

For customers who rely on MTN for work, online transactions and business operations, the interruption reportedly caused significant inconvenience.

Customers Call for Compensation

Some affected subscribers questioned why they had to bear the consequences of a network failure despite paying for data subscriptions and other services.

One customer complained that the disruption had affected business activities, while another said the loss of connectivity had caused a major financial setback.

Other subscribers criticised the lack of advance notice, arguing that customers should have been informed so they could make alternative arrangements.

The complaints have renewed discussions about the responsibility of telecommunications companies to provide reliable services and compensate customers when service quality falls below regulatory standards.

MTN Responds to the Outage

MTN acknowledged the network challenges on Thursday, informing customers that some services might be temporarily unavailable in the affected locations while its engineers worked to resolve the problem.

By Friday, October 9, the telecommunications company announced that services had been restored and apologised to subscribers who experienced difficulties.

The company advised customers still experiencing connectivity problems to restart their devices to reconnect to the network.

However, the operator did not provide a detailed explanation of what caused the disruption in its restoration announcement.

Will Affected Subscribers Receive Compensation?

The complaints come shortly after eligible MTN customers began receiving airtime credits under a separate compensation programme for poor network quality recorded between February and April 2026.

That programme followed directives from the Nigerian Communications Commission and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission.

Under the regulatory framework, compensation depends on the affected location, the nature of the service failure and the subscriber’s qualifying usage during the relevant period.

It remains unclear whether the latest outage will qualify for a separate compensation exercise.

As subscribers await further clarification, the incident has renewed calls for telecommunications operators to improve service reliability and provide clearer communication when disruptions occur.
