Former Manchester United captain and football pundit Gary Neville has asked Sky Sports to temporarily remove him from commentary duties for Manchester City matches until the club’s ongoing financial appeal is resolved.

Neville made the request after Manchester City defeated Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield on Sunday, October 11, 2026, in a Premier League encounter in which he was part of the Sky Sports commentary team.

Speaking about the situation, Neville said he would welcome a break from covering City while the club’s appeal against findings of financial rule breaches remains unresolved.

“We were just doing the podcast and I said, if you could take me off Manchester City games for the next few months, until the verdict has been heard, I’d be delighted,” he said.

Neville Says Unresolved Case Overshadows City’s Achievements

The former England international acknowledged the difficulty of winning at Anfield but argued that the unresolved case makes it difficult to celebrate the club’s performances without reservations.

“To come and win at Anfield is really difficult and we should be eulogising over them without a ‘but’ or any hesitation,” he said, adding that the financial case remained in the back of his mind.

Neville also warned that the prolonged uncertainty was damaging the Premier League’s reputation and called for the matter to be resolved.

Manchester City Deny Wrongdoing

The controversy follows an independent commission’s findings that Manchester City breached multiple Premier League financial regulations. The club has challenged the findings and continues to deny wrongdoing.

The outcome of the appeal could have significant implications for the club, although the eventual consequences will depend on the final decision.

City Beat Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield

On the pitch, City secured a convincing victory over Liverpool, with Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki scoring in the 3-0 win. Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch was sent off during the match.

Despite the result, the financial dispute continues to dominate discussion around the club, with Neville’s comments highlighting the pressure on the Premier League to bring the case to a conclusion.
