Soludo Sounds the Alarm Over a Growing Gap Between Igbo Youths and Nigeria’s Security Forces

Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has expressed concern over the reluctance of many Igbo youths to join the Nigerian military, police and other security agencies, warning that negative perceptions of the institutions could discourage a new generation from pursuing careers in national service.

Soludo made the remarks during a memorial service for retired Lieutenant-General Chikadibia Isaac Obiakor at Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka, Anambra State.

“There is a phenomenon happening in Igbo land today. The perception of the armed forces amongst our youth is very, very bad. Our people are no longer joining the army, police or any security forces,” the governor said.

His comments have renewed discussions about the relationship between young people in the South-East and Nigeria’s security institutions, particularly the factors influencing recruitment into the armed forces.

Why Soludo Wants a Change

The governor argued that the achievements of respected military officers could help change young people’s perceptions of military service.

He pointed to the career of the late Obiakor as an example of how an officer from the South-East could rise through the ranks and contribute to Nigeria’s international reputation.

Obiakor served as a Force Commander with the United Nations Mission in Liberia and became the first African appointed as the UN Military Adviser for Peacekeeping Operations in 2008. He retired from the Nigerian Army in 2011.

Soludo maintained that such examples should inspire young people to consider careers in the military and other security agencies.

Community Leaders Asked to Step In

The Anambra governor also called on traditional rulers, community leaders and elders to take a more active role in guiding younger generations.

He urged them to maintain close relationships with their communities and promote positive role models capable of encouraging patriotism, public service and national participation.

According to him, the influence of respected figures within communities could help young people appreciate the opportunities available through service to the country.

A Wider Question About Representation

Soludo’s remarks have brought renewed attention to the participation of South-East youths in the country’s security institutions.

The reasons behind recruitment patterns are complex, and perceptions of security agencies can be influenced by historical experiences, contemporary security operations, career prospects and trust in public institutions.

The governor’s appeal highlights the need for further engagement between security agencies and communities in the region, alongside efforts to address concerns that may discourage eligible applicants.

Whether his call will encourage more young people from the South-East to enlist remains to be see
