Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has urged young Nigerians to take an active role in governance and demand a place where important decisions about the country’s future are made.
He made the call on Monday during his 41st birthday colloquium, themed “Shaping the Future Together”, held at Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos.
Seyi urged young people to learn from experienced leaders while preparing themselves to take on greater responsibilities in public service and politics.
He stressed that youths should not remain on the sidelines while decisions affecting their future are being made, encouraging them to participate actively in political and policy discussions.
“Experience must make room at the table for the younger collaborators, while ambitious new leaders must use that experience to prepare themselves for responsibilities,” he said.
He further challenged young Nigerians who gain access to positions of influence to take their responsibilities seriously by studying policy documents, understanding the country’s history and asking difficult questions, even when doing so could be uncomfortable for their political allies.
According to him, gaining a seat at the table should come with a commitment to contribute meaningfully rather than simply enjoy the privilege of being present.
Seyi also defended the economic reforms introduced by his father’s administration, including the removal of the petrol subsidy, changes to the foreign exchange system and tax reforms.
He argued that the policies were aimed at addressing longstanding structural challenges and building a stronger economic foundation for future generations, while acknowledging the importance of preparing young people to shape the country’s direction.
The event brought together political leaders, policymakers, business figures and youth advocates to discuss leadership, economic development and greater youth participation in governance.
His remarks have added to the ongoing debate about the role of young Nigerians in politics and the responsibilities of the current generation of leaders in shaping the country’s future.
