Hydrogen Payment Services Company Limited has partnered with the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education to equip teachers and students with practical artificial intelligence (AI) skills through its AI4Learning Initiative.

The programme, which marked its first edition, was designed to help secondary school teachers and students understand how AI can support teaching, learning, research and everyday activities while encouraging responsible use of the technology.

The initiative was organized in collaboration with the ministry and its Education District III office, with separate sessions held at Victoria Island Senior Secondary School and Kuramo Senior College in Lagos.

During the teachers’ programme, participants explored how AI could assist with lesson preparation, creativity and adapting teaching methods to meet different students’ needs.

Students, meanwhile, learnt how the technology could support their studies, research, critical thinking and creative work.

A key message throughout the programme was that AI should serve as an assistant rather than replace human judgement. Participants were encouraged to verify information generated by AI tools, protect personal data and remain responsible for the work and decisions supported by the technology.

Speaking on the initiative, Hydrogen’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, Fiyinfoluwa Olorunsola, said the company wanted teachers and students to develop the knowledge and confidence needed to explore AI’s possibilities while understanding its limitations.

She noted that preparing young people and educators to engage with emerging technologies would help them adapt to an increasingly AI-driven world.

The programme also adopted a train-the-trainer approach, equipping educators with knowledge they could share with colleagues and students, potentially extending the initiative’s impact beyond the initial participants.

The Vice-Principal of Victoria Island Senior Secondary School, Regina Iton, welcomed the programme, describing practical exposure to AI as valuable for teachers and students navigating technological changes.

Hydrogen’s Head of Marketing and Communications, Obinna Ojekwe, said partnerships between the public and private sectors were important in expanding access to useful digital skills within Nigeria’s public education system.

Through AI4Learning, the company aims to help educators teach more effectively and enable students to use AI confidently, critically and responsibly.
