The Federal Government has condemned rising xenophobic attacks against fellow Africans, warning that hostility towards people based on their nationality threatens continental unity, integration and peaceful coexistence.
Nigeria expressed its position during the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption of a political declaration addressing racism and racial discrimination.
Speaking on behalf of Nigeria, Bola Asaju said economic hardship, unemployment and other social challenges should never be used to justify violence, persecution or discrimination against foreign nationals.
The government called on African countries to take concrete steps to protect migrants and other foreign nationals living within their borders, stressing the importance of mutual respect and solidarity among African nations.
Nigeria’s position comes amid continuing concerns about attacks and discrimination targeting foreigners in parts of the continent, raising questions about the safety of migrants and the commitment of governments to protecting their rights.
The Federal Government maintained that African countries must work together to tackle xenophobia and strengthen peaceful relations among their populations.
It also emphasised that racism and nationality-based discrimination undermine the shared aspirations of African nations for economic cooperation, regional integration and sustainable development.
The call adds to wider international efforts to address discrimination and promote the protection of people regardless of their national origin.
