The family of a 43-year-old commercial bus driver, Ifeanyi Christopher Nworie, has called for justice following his death from gunshot injuries sustained during violence surrounding the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) campaign activities in Enugu State.
Nworie, popularly known as Agima, was reportedly shot in the chest on Saturday, 10 October, while returning home after dropping off passengers. His elder brother, Afam Nworie, told SaharaReporters that the deceased was not a politician but had stopped his vehicle after noticing people running and shouting near Parklane Hospital in Enugu.
According to the family, a bullet struck Nworie while he was standing in front of his Toyota bus, leaving him critically injured.
He was rushed to Parklane Hospital before being referred to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, where medical examinations reportedly revealed serious internal injuries around his heart and lungs.
Afam said the family was subsequently directed to a private hospital, where they paid ₦4 million for emergency surgery. Although relatives were initially informed that the operation had been successful, Nworie later died while receiving treatment in the intensive care unit.
The grieving family also alleged that government security officials, including police officers and the governor’s Chief Security Officer, visited the hospital and assured them that arrangements would be made for further treatment. However, they said they received no meaningful follow-up after his death.
Afam expressed disappointment over what he described as the silence of the Enugu State Government and the police, insisting that those responsible for his brother’s death must be identified and prosecuted.
The family is demanding the arrest of the alleged shooter and anyone suspected of sponsoring or facilitating the violence.
Nworie’s death has also raised concerns about the safety of residents caught up in political confrontations. His family disclosed that he had been preparing to formalise his marriage to his fiancée before his untimely death.
Meanwhile, Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has called for a thorough and impartial investigation into the violence, maintaining that anyone found responsible for criminal acts should face the law regardless of political connections.
As of the time of the report, no arrests had been publicly announced in connection with Nworie’s death. The allegations surrounding the shooting remain subject to investigation.
