The African Democratic Congress Presidential Campaign Council has accused President Bola Tinubu of avoiding direct engagement with Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general election, insisting that he must defend his administration’s record before seeking another term.

The council argued that Tinubu’s reported decision not to attend every campaign rally across the country amounted to disrespect for voters who would ultimately decide his political future.

The Director of Media and Publicity of the ADC campaign council, Kola Ologbondiyan, made the remarks while receiving a delegation of youths under the Young Voters for Atiku group.

Ologbondiyan questioned why a sitting president seeking re-election would be unwilling to personally engage voters across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

He dismissed the argument that official responsibilities could prevent Tinubu from participating in nationwide campaign activities, citing former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari, who campaigned while in office.

The ADC spokesman also accused the ruling All Progressives Congress of failing Nigerians, pointing to concerns over hunger, poverty, insecurity and the rising cost of living.

According to him, the President should be prepared to answer questions from citizens experiencing economic hardship rather than leave the task of defending his administration to governors, ministers and political associates.

Ologbondiyan urged young Nigerians to reject the APC in 2027, arguing that another term for the ruling party would prolong the difficulties facing the country.

He described former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, the ADC’s presidential candidate, as physically fit and mentally prepared to campaign across the country.

The campaign council said an Atiku-led administration would prioritize economic recovery, wealth creation, improved security and better living standards. It also pledged to reintroduce fuel subsidy to reduce the cost of petroleum products.

The controversy follows Tinubu’s recent remarks at the inauguration of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, where he said he would not attend every campaign event because he needed to continue focusing on governance and the country’s economic responsibilities.

Atiku has similarly challenged the President to account for his first-term performance before asking Nigerians for another mandate.

The exchange signals an intensifying political contest as the major parties prepare for the 2027 presidential election.
