Chelsea captain Reece James has undergone successful minor knee surgery following an injury sustained during training, the Premier League club announced on Friday, October 16, 2026.

The 26-year-old England international missed Chelsea’s recent Premier League matches against Brentford and Bournemouth while medical assessments were carried out to determine the extent of the injury.

James was unavailable for Chelsea’s 5-1 victory over Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge on Saturday after experiencing the problem during a training session. Further medical examinations subsequently established that surgery was necessary.

In a statement, Chelsea confirmed that the procedure was successful and that the defender had begun his recovery.

“Reece has already begun his road to recovery and will be supported by the club’s medical department at Cobham during this rehabilitation phase,” the club said.

The club also wished its captain a speedy recovery and pledged to support him throughout his rehabilitation.

The latest setback adds to James’ history of injury problems, which have previously disrupted his availability for both Chelsea and the England national team.

Despite these challenges, the defender remains an important figure at Stamford Bridge, where he serves as club captain.

Chelsea had not officially confirmed a return date for James following the surgery as of Friday. His recovery progress and subsequent medical assessments will determine when he can resume training and competitive action.

The injury comes as Chelsea prepare for their Premier League trip to Everton on Saturday, October 17, with the London club looking to maintain their momentum after the convincing victory over Bournemouth.

James’ absence represents another fitness concern for Chelsea as the season progresses, with the club expected to monitor
