A serving Nigerian police inspector has sparked public concern after speaking out about the hardship and welfare challenges he says he has endured during more than two decades in the Nigeria Police Force.

The officer, identified in media reports as Inspector Nkuje Samson, said the financial pressure of providing for his family had become increasingly difficult despite his years of service.

In a video interview circulated on social media, Samson appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene, drawing attention to what he described as the difficult conditions confronting officers within the force.

He disclosed that meeting basic family responsibilities, including paying his children’s school fees, had become a struggle. He also expressed concern about the consequences he could face for speaking publicly about the situation.

According to reports, the inspector said he understood that his decision to speak out could attract disciplinary measures, including a reduction in rank or confinement to the barracks.

Despite those concerns, he said he felt compelled to share his experience, arguing that officers should not continue to suffer in silence.

His account has renewed public discussion about police welfare, salaries, working conditions and the ability of serving personnel to meet basic living expenses amid Nigeria’s rising cost of living.

The controversy has also raised questions about the support available to officers who dedicate years to public service but say they struggle to provide for their families.

As of the latest reports reviewed, the Nigeria Police Force had not publicly responded to the specific allegations. Separately, a media report published on 15 October claimed Samson had been detained for questioning; that claim should be treated cautiously pending independent confirmation.

The development has intensified calls for greater attention to the welfare and mental well-being of security personnel across the country.
