Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has approved an increase in the monthly salaries of cleaners at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital in Ogbomoso from ₦15,000 to ₦80,000.
The governor announced the decision on Thursday during a meeting with hospital management, labour union representatives and other stakeholders, following an appeal by the cleaners over their low wages.
The salary adjustment brings their monthly earnings in line with the minimum wage adopted by the Oyo State Government.
Makinde also assured striking workers at the teaching hospital that his administration would address outstanding salary arrears, promotion arrears and other welfare-related concerns.
According to the governor, Oyo State’s wage bill has increased significantly, rising from ₦4.5bn in 2019 to ₦18bn in 2026, despite the challenges associated with meeting other financial obligations.
He acknowledged the concerns raised by the workers and appealed to them to reconsider their industrial action, assuring them that the government was committed to resolving the issues.
The governor further disclosed that ₦162m in salary arrears owed to workers would be paid by mid-November. He also promised to clear ₦38m in minimum wage and promotion arrears relating to October, November and December 2024.
On the Medical Residency Training Bill, Makinde said he would sign the legislation once the final copies were submitted to him, expressing hope that the process would be completed in the first week of November.
