India’s youth-led ‘Cockroach’ movement is facing renewed confrontation with authorities as supporters prepare to rally in New Delhi over the detention of its leaders and demand the resignation of the country’s election chief.

The planned demonstration on Friday, 16 October, is intended to protest the imprisonment of two leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), who were detained after demonstrating at a restricted protest site earlier in the week.

The group’s founder, Abhijeet Dipke, was also detained by police ahead of the rally, according to Reuters, as security was tightened across parts of the Indian capital.

The protests have increasingly focused on Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and a revision of voter registers that critics allege has unfairly removed millions of names, potentially affecting minority communities and supporters of opposition parties.

However, India’s Election Commission has rejected allegations of political bias, maintaining that the revision process is intended to remove duplicate and ineligible entries. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has also dismissed accusations that the process is designed to influence electoral outcomes.

The Cockroach movement, which gained prominence through youth-led protests and online activism, has attracted support from student organisations and opposition groups. Its campaign has developed into a broader challenge over electoral transparency, democratic rights and the treatment of protesters.

Authorities have increased security around key locations in New Delhi and warned of possible traffic disruptions as demonstrators prepare to gather.

The latest confrontation highlights growing tensions between the movement and the authorities, with protesters insisting on accountability while the government maintains that electoral procedures must be protected from political interference.
