Nigerians living in Qatar have honoured the country’s ambassador, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, in recognition of improved consular services following the successful delivery of hundreds of Nigerian passports within about two weeks.
The award was presented during a ceremony organised by the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO), Qatar chapter, to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The recognition followed a passport intervention exercise conducted in Doha between August 11 and 21, 2026, during which 751 Nigerian nationals applied for new passports. The applications comprised 441 requests for five-year passports and 310 for 10-year passports.
Distribution of the completed passports began on September 18, giving applicants access to their travel documents in a significantly shorter period.
Yakubu commended the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Kemi Nandap, for supporting the exercise and ensuring the prompt deployment of an intervention team.
The ambassador said the development reflected efforts to improve service delivery and address the needs of Nigerians living abroad, particularly those who depend on valid passports for travel, employment and residency documentation.
The ceremony was attended by the Executive Director of Qatar’s Workers Support and Insurance Fund, under the Ministry of Interior, Kholoud Saif Al Kubaisi, alongside members of the diplomatic community.
The development represents a welcome improvement for Nigerians in Qatar, where delays in obtaining travel documents can create difficulties for citizens dealing with employment, travel and immigration requirements.
