Controversial Nigerian cleric Prophet Chukwuemeka Ohanaemere, popularly known as Odumeje, has revealed that he neither collects tithes nor teaches about tithing in his church, insisting that his ministry focuses on demonstrating spiritual power.
The founder of the Mountain of Holy Ghost Intervention and Deliverance Ministry in Onitsha, Anambra State, made the disclosure during an appearance on the Honest Bunch Podcast in an episode uploaded to YouTube on Monday.
Odumeje criticised churches that, according to him, place excessive emphasis on collecting money from members without providing practical evidence of the spiritual impact of their ministry.
He argued that some religious leaders focus more on ensuring that worshippers part with their money than on demonstrating the power they preach about.
Explaining his approach to ministry, the cleric said his primary mission was to demonstrate spiritual power rather than concentrate on teachings about tithes and financial giving.
However, Odumeje clarified that he was not opposed to tithing, stressing that the decision to pay should be a personal choice between an individual and God.
He also faulted the practice of making church members believe that refusing to pay tithes would prevent them from entering heaven.
According to him, financial contributions should not be imposed on worshippers through fear, pressure or claims that their salvation depends on making such payments.
The cleric maintained that people should be allowed to make their own decisions about tithing without being coerced by religious leaders.
Odumeje’s comments have added to ongoing public discussions about the collection of tithes, financial accountability in religious institutions and the responsibilities of church leaders towards their congregations.
