The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested a man after intercepting a Lexus LX570 SUV allegedly bearing a concealed number plate marked “Presidency” in Maitama, Abuja.
The suspect was arrested at about 8pm on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, after police operatives stopped the vehicle during an operation in the area.
According to the police, the vehicle carried registration number 10B218 FG, with the inscription “Presidency” on its number plate.
The command said preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect allegedly impersonated a permanent secretary attached to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
Police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed that further checks were conducted after the suspect claimed he was authorised to use the number plate.
The investigation reportedly revealed that the plate was fabricated and that the suspect presented forged vehicle registration documents.
The police said investigations were ongoing and that the suspect would be charged in court upon their conclusion.
The command urged residents to cooperate with security agencies and report suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
The arrest comes weeks after the FCT Police Command warned motorists against using concealed, fake, defaced or unauthorised number plates, particularly on sport utility vehicles, stressing that such practices could undermine security and make vehicles difficult to identify.
