The Nigerian Senate has confirmed the appointment of Eze Anaba, President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) and Editor of Vanguard Newspapers, alongside 15 other nominees to the governing board of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
The confirmation followed the consideration of a report presented on Wednesday by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire.
The Senate also confirmed Dr Salamatu Hussaina Suleiman as chairperson of the board, while Dr Anthony Ojukwu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), was confirmed as Executive Secretary.
Other confirmed members include Mrs Roseline Tasha, Ambassador Adam Yubak Baku, Assistant Controller-General of Corrections Felix Lawrence, Edmund Chinonye, Chinonye Obiaku (SAN), Oluwakemi Asiwaju Okere-Odo, Professor Adedeji Ogunji, Kingsley Chidozie, Mohammed Adelodu, Maupe Ogun-Yusuf, Otunba Francis Meshioye, Patience Patrick Udoh and Hawwa Ibrahim.
President Bola Tinubu had in April written to the Senate, seeking confirmation of the nominees as part of efforts to reconstitute the commission’s governing board in line with the National Human Rights Commission (Establishment) Act, 2010.
The presidential request was made pursuant to Section 2(3) of the Act, which empowers the President to constitute the commission’s governing board, subject to Senate confirmation.
The nominees were drawn from different professional backgrounds, including journalism, law, academia, public administration and security services.
Anaba’s appointment is particularly significant for the media industry, given his leadership of the Nigerian Guild of Editors and his role as editor of Vanguard Newspapers. His professional experience has involved engagement with issues relating to press freedom, accountability and the protection of fundamental rights.
The NHRC is responsible for promoting and protecting human rights in Nigeria. Its statutory duties include investigating alleged violations, encouraging compliance with human rights standards and supporting the protection of citizens’ fundamental freedoms.
The reconstitution of the board is expected to strengthen the commission’s leadership and institutional capacity as it continues to address human rights concerns across the country.
