Former Super Eagles captain and coach Sunday Oliseh has criticised ex-Nigeria international John Obi Mikel over comments he considered deeply insulting, insisting that his own football career deserves respect.

Oliseh expressed his displeasure while responding to remarks reportedly made by Mikel during a discussion about Nigerian football and the country’s former internationals.

The former midfielder questioned what he viewed as Mikel’s attempt to undermine his achievements, challenging the Chelsea legend to identify the level of football he played that Oliseh had not experienced.

“Where did you play football that I didn’t play?” Oliseh asked, expressing frustration over what he described as the biggest insult he had received from Mikel.

Oliseh Defends His Football Credentials

Oliseh enjoyed an accomplished career in European football, featuring for clubs including Ajax, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus.

He was also a key member of Nigeria’s national team, helping the Super Eagles win the Africa Cup of Nations in 1994 and secure Olympic gold at the Atlanta 1996 Games.

After retiring as a player, he moved into coaching and later served as head coach of the Super Eagles from 2015 to 2016.

Mikel, meanwhile, enjoyed a successful career with Chelsea, winning the UEFA Champions League, the English Premier League and other major honours. He also represented Nigeria at the 2014 FIFA World Cup and was part of the Super Eagles team that won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

Exchange Rekindles Debate Over Nigerian Football Legends

The disagreement has renewed discussions about the contributions of different generations of Nigerian footballers and the respect owed to former internationals.

Both men made significant contributions to Nigerian football, although their careers unfolded in different eras and roles.

Oliseh’s response underscores the tensions that can emerge when former players debate football history, achievements and the standards expected of those representing the country.

The exchange has also drawn attention to the growing influence of football podcasts and interviews, where candid opinions from former players often spark wider conversations among fans.
