The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, is reportedly working towards assembling a broad-based political coalition, described as a ‘rainbow coalition’, to strengthen President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s chances of securing re-election in 2027.
The proposed alliance is expected to bring together politicians and influential political figures from different parties and ideological backgrounds in support of the President’s second-term ambition.
Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, has remained an influential political figure despite his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), while maintaining his support for the Tinubu-led administration.
The initiative is seen as part of efforts to expand the President’s political support base ahead of the next general elections by attracting politicians beyond the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The FCT minister has repeatedly demonstrated his willingness to work with political actors across party lines, a development that has continued to generate debate within the opposition PDP.
The proposed coalition could also reshape political calculations ahead of 2027, particularly as different political groups begin positioning themselves for the presidential contest.
With the next general election drawing closer, Wike’s reported efforts highlight the growing political manoeuvring surrounding Tinubu’s re-election bid and the possibility of new alliances across party lines.
