Former Kogi West Senator and African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, Dino Melaye, has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of laying the groundwork for possible manipulation of the 2027 general elections.
Melaye raised the alarm in a post on his X account on Sunday, warning that Nigerians would resist any attempt to undermine the credibility of the forthcoming polls.
The former lawmaker expressed concern over the commission’s recent activities, arguing that they raised questions about the integrity of the electoral process ahead of the elections.
He called on INEC to address the concerns and ensure that the will of Nigerians is respected at the ballot box.
His comments come amid controversy surrounding suspected artificial intelligence-generated photographs discovered in the commission’s preliminary voters’ register, prompting calls for greater transparency and a thorough review of questionable entries.
Melaye, who is now a prominent figure in the ADC, has also vowed that the opposition party will resist intimidation by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and defend its votes during the 2027 elections.
He urged INEC to remain impartial and conduct elections that are free, fair and credible, stressing that Nigerians would not accept any attempt to manipulate the outcome.
However, Melaye’s allegations remain claims by the opposition politician and do not, on their own, establish that INEC is planning to rig the elections.
The controversy has intensified calls for the electoral commission to strengthen public confidence in the voters’ register and demonstrate its commitment to a transparent electoral process ahead of 2027.
