The Oyo State Government has dismissed allegations that Governor Seyi Makinde is hostile to Islam, insisting that his administration has consistently demonstrated respect for religious diversity and the rights of worshippers.
The government’s response followed criticism from the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), which had raised concerns over issues involving the state government and the Muslim community.
In a statement, the state government maintained that describing Makinde as anti-Islam was unfair and contradicted his record in office.
It pointed to the construction of a mosque as one of the examples of the governor’s commitment to accommodating the religious needs of residents, regardless of their faith.
The administration argued that Makinde’s leadership has been guided by fairness, inclusiveness and respect for people of different religious backgrounds.
It also maintained that the governor has not discriminated against Muslims or any other religious group in the discharge of his responsibilities.
The government urged religious organisations and community leaders to avoid statements capable of creating unnecessary tension, stressing the importance of peaceful coexistence in the state.
Oyo State is home to people of different religious beliefs, and the government said it would continue to promote an environment where everyone can practise their faith without fear or discrimination.
The administration reiterated its commitment to protecting religious freedom and ensuring that governance remains inclusive.
