A 40-year-old British woman, Claire Chadwick, and her unborn baby girl have died in Nigeria after she suffered serious medical complications late in her pregnancy, leaving her family devastated and appealing for assistance to return their remains to the United Kingdom.
Claire, who was 37 weeks pregnant, had relocated from Cardiff, Wales, to Nigeria to build a new life with her husband, Ibrahim.
According to reports, her unborn daughter died in the womb before Claire developed sepsis and subsequently died from septic shock.
The heartbreaking incident has left her relatives in South Wales facing the difficult task of arranging the return of both mother and child for burial at home.
Claire’s sister, Shannon, said the family’s immediate priority was to bring them back to the UK so they could be laid to rest with dignity and surrounded by loved ones.
The family launched a fundraising appeal with a target of £10,000 to cover repatriation expenses and associated legal arrangements. The appeal reportedly received overwhelming support from members of the public.
Claire had built a following on social media alongside her husband, with the couple sharing videos about their relationship, faith and food challenges on TikTok and Instagram.
Her sister described her as a lively, strong-minded woman who loved dancing, making people laugh and standing up for what she believed in.
Claire is survived by her 19-year-old son, who lives in Wales, as well as her husband and extended family.
The family has also received support from REST, a Welsh charity that assists relatives dealing with the sudden or tragic death of loved ones abroad.
A spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office confirmed that the authorities were supporting the family following the death of a British woman in Nigeria.
The tragedy has drawn sympathy from friends and social media users, many of whom have expressed condolences and offered support to the grieving family.
