The Arewa Revival Project has passed a vote of confidence in Senate President Godswill Akpabio and called on Nigerians to verify politically sensitive information before sharing it, warning that unverified claims could heighten regional tensions.
The group made the call while reacting to a viral social media publication allegedly quoting Akpabio as saying that Northerners would suffer if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu loses the 2027 presidential election.
In a statement signed by its Project Coordinator, Muttaka Ahmed Ibrahim, the organisation described the alleged statement as “deeply inflammatory.” It, however, stressed that a graphic carrying Akpabio’s photograph and quotation marks did not constitute proof that the Senate President made the remarks.
The group challenged those circulating the allegation to provide the original video or audio recording, transcript, date, venue and credible source from which the claim originated.
According to the organisation, unverified social media content should not be allowed to become a tool for creating division among Nigeria’s regions and communities.
The Arewa Revival Project therefore urged members of the public to exercise caution and confirm the authenticity of politically sensitive claims before sharing them, especially as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.
“Whatever political differences may exist among Nigerians, the office of the President of the Senate deserves constructive engagement and responsible public discourse,” the group said.
The organisation also commended Akpabio for what it described as his commitment to legislative leadership, national dialogue, institutional cooperation and democratic governance.
It said effective leadership of the National Assembly requires courage, experience, diplomacy, consultation and the ability to balance diverse political interests while ensuring that legislative business continues effectively.
The group explained that its vote of confidence in Akpabio was based on what it described as verifiable actions, legislative responsibilities and measurable contributions, rather than anonymous social media allegations or politically charged graphics.
It urged the Senate President to continue promoting national unity, peaceful coexistence, legislative effectiveness and constructive engagement among Nigeria’s diverse communities.
The Arewa Revival Project also appealed to Nigerians to place the interest of the country above political parties and individual politicians. It stressed that political competition should never become an excuse for spreading messages capable of provoking hatred, suspicion or confrontation.
“Nigeria is bigger than any political party, individual or election,” the organisation added.
The group urged Nigerians to verify before sharing, question before believing and unite before being divided, warning that responsible citizenship is essential to preserving peace and national cohesion as the 2027 elections draw closer.
