The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old man, Okpara Emmanuel, over the alleged murder of his girlfriend, identified as Chinyere, in the Olympic Layout area of Enugu.
According to the police, the incident followed an argument between the couple over allegations about who infected the other with HIV. During preliminary questioning, the suspect allegedly admitted striking the woman on the head with a pestle, leading to her death.
Police said the incident occurred on September 19, after which the suspect allegedly wrapped the woman’s remains in nylon and hid them inside the toilet of his apartment.
The body was reportedly discovered after neighbours noticed a foul smell coming from the apartment. They forced their way inside and found the decomposing remains before apprehending the suspect, who was later rescued from an angry mob and arrested by police officers.
The remains have since been taken to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while efforts are ongoing to locate and notify the victim’s relatives.
The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Bitrus Giwa, has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to investigate the case and ensure that the suspect is prosecuted if the investigation establishes sufficient grounds.
The police have also advised members of the public, particularly young women, to inform trusted relatives or friends about their movements and exercise caution when visiting or spending time with others.
The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue.
