Nigerians can now check their home addresses and obtain unique digital postcodes through a new national addressing system introduced by the Federal Government through the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST).
The National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System was launched nationwide on October 1, 2026, giving every addressable building a unique 11-character code designed to make locations easier to identify and verify.
The platform also allows users to search for locations using street addresses, place names, postcodes and aliases. In some cases, homeowners’ names may appear in the address descriptions where properties are commonly identified by the names of their owners.
Here is how Nigerians can check their digital postcodes and the address information associated with their buildings.
- Visit the official postcode website
Visit https://postcode.gov.ng and select the option to find your postcode. Users can also access the service through the official NIPOST Postcode application, available for Android and iOS. - Search for your home address
Enter your house number, street name, neighbourhood or another relevant location detail in the search field. You can also search by a place name or alias where available.
Select the result that matches your address and examine the map to confirm that it points to your building. - Check whether your name appears
Some properties may be identified through their owners’ names or informal descriptions collected during field data gathering.
Users can inspect the address information linked to their buildings or search for a name commonly used to identify the property.
However, not finding your name does not necessarily mean your building is missing from the system. The digital postcode belongs to the building, not the individual living there.
- Use your phone’s location to find your building
If you are at or near your home, open the postcode application and select “Find My Postcode”. Allow access to your phone’s location when prompted.
The application will display a map of the surrounding area. Identify your building and select it to retrieve its unique postcode.
Residents should carefully confirm that they have selected the correct building, as neighbouring properties may have different codes. - Correct errors or request a missing postcode
If your building is missing from the system, you can submit a request through the official website or application, providing relevant address details and location information. A Google Maps link can also help identify the property.
Where the displayed information is incorrect, users can submit a correction for review by NIPOST. - Understand what the digital postcode means
The new postcode identifies a specific building or addressable location rather than an individual resident. People living in the same building can therefore use the same postcode alongside their regular address.
The system is intended to improve address identification for deliveries, logistics, emergency response, e-commerce and public service delivery. Finding, saving and sharing a digital postcode is free.
Nigerians are advised to verify the building displayed on the map before using or sharing the code to avoid providing an incorrect location.
