Senior economist at SPM Professionals, Paul Alaje, has urged Nigerians to look beyond political slogans and assess presidential candidates in the 2027 general election based on their ability to improve living standards and strengthen the economy.
Alaje made the call during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, where he discussed the economic issues voters should consider before choosing the country’s next president.
He argued that the most important question for Nigerians should be whether a candidate’s economic policies would enable citizens to afford basic necessities, pay rent and get more value from their earnings.
According to the economist, promises of higher salaries mean little if the prices of food, housing, transportation and other essential goods continue to rise faster than people’s incomes.
“Any candidate who is telling you that the money in your pocket will buy more, will improve more, and will afford your rent, that is the candidate you should vote for,” Alaje said.
Productivity Should Be a Priority
Alaje also warned that candidates who fail to explain how they intend to increase Nigeria’s productivity risk worsening the country’s economic challenges if elected.
He stressed that improving productivity should be central to any serious plan for economic recovery, as increased output can support growth, create jobs and strengthen household incomes.
The economist urged presidential hopefuls to present clear, practical proposals explaining how they would grow the economy rather than relying solely on campaign promises.
His comments come as political parties and aspirants prepare for the 2027 general election amid continued public concern about the cost of living and the purchasing power of Nigerian households.
Nigerians Urged to Examine Economic Plans
Alaje’s advice places the economy at the centre of the debate over the country’s next leadership, urging voters to evaluate candidates according to the likely impact of their policies on everyday life.
For millions of Nigerians struggling with rising expenses, the ability to buy food, afford accommodation and meet household needs remains a major concern.
The economist’s message is that voters should demand measurable economic plans and judge candidates by whether their proposals can translate into better living conditions.
As the 2027 election approaches, the pressure is likely to grow on presidential contenders to explain how they would increase productivity, improve purchasing power and make life more affordable for citizens.
