Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has said Nigerians should not expect a saint to lead the country, arguing that the priority should be finding a leader with competence, good character and compassion.
Obi made the remarks while discussing leadership and the expectations surrounding political office ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He stressed that Nigeria needs leaders who understand the country’s challenges and possess the ability and commitment to address them, rather than people regarded as flawless.
He maintained that leadership should be judged by a person’s ability to do what is right, demonstrate sound judgement and serve the public interest.
Obi also emphasised the importance of accountability and responsible conduct, saying the country needs people who can deliver effective governance and respond to the needs of ordinary Nigerians.
His comments come as political figures begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with leadership qualifications and the record of potential candidates likely to feature prominently in public debate.
