The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has cautioned universities and other tertiary institutions against issuing official admission letters to candidates, insisting that the responsibility rests solely with the examination and admissions body.
JAMB Registrar, Professor Segun Aina, gave the warning while receiving a delegation from Veritas University, Bwari, Abuja, during a courtesy visit to his office.
Aina stressed that JAMB is the only body legally authorised to issue official admission letters to candidates seeking admission into universities, polytechnics and colleges of education across Nigeria.
He expressed concern that candidates could be misled into believing they had secured valid admission simply because they received a letter from an institution.
The registrar urged institutions involved in the practice to stop immediately and ensure that candidates obtain the appropriate admission documents through JAMB.
He also reiterated the Federal Ministry of Education’s directive that admissions must be processed through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS). Any admission conducted outside the approved process, he warned, is considered illegal and invalid.
Under the procedure, candidates must accept their admission through CAPS before obtaining their official JAMB admission letters. Institutions are not permitted to replace these documents with letters issued independently.
Aina further explained that only admissions processed through the approved platform are recognized for official purposes, including mobilization for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
The warning serves as a reminder to prospective students to verify their admission status through the appropriate channels to avoid complications with their academic records and future national service eligibility.
