The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council has denied allegations that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is plotting to assassinate former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, challenging those behind the claims to provide evidence.

The council described the allegation as serious and urged former APC chieftain and African Democratic Congress (ADC) member Timi Frank to substantiate his claims.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, the council’s spokesperson, Dele Alake, insisted that neither the Presidency nor the APC campaign organisation was involved in any plan to kill Atiku or any other opposition figure.

Alake called on security agencies to invite Frank to explain the basis of his allegation, stressing that any credible threat to life must be investigated regardless of political affiliation.

The controversy followed claims by Frank that Atiku, the ADC’s presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections, faced possible threats to his life and political freedom.

Frank had reportedly appealed to United States President Donald Trump and other international leaders to intervene, expressing concerns about alleged attempts to intimidate or arrest the former vice president.

APC Dismisses Claims of Withdrawn Security Details

The campaign council also rejected reports that Atiku’s security personnel had been withdrawn, insisting that the former vice president remained protected by the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS).

According to Alake, Tinubu had directed security agencies to strengthen protection for presidential, vice-presidential, governorship and deputy governorship candidates across the country ahead of the 2027 elections.

He maintained that Atiku’s security arrangements had not been compromised and that additional protection had been provided in view of his status as a former vice president and presidential candidate.

The council further urged Frank to submit any information that could assist security agencies in investigating the allegations.

APC Accuses Opposition Figures of Raising Political Tension

The campaign council criticised the allegations, describing them as an attempt to generate unnecessary political tension and attract public attention.

Alake also defended Tinubu’s democratic credentials, recalling the president’s role in opposition politics before the APC defeated the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2015 general elections.

He urged politicians and their supporters to exercise restraint in their public statements, warning that unsubstantiated allegations could heighten tensions as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections intensify.

The council maintained that political competition should remain peaceful and focused on issues affecting Nigerians.

The allegations and the APC’s denial have emerged amid growing political activity ahead of the next general elections. The claims of an assassination plot remain disputed, with the campaign council insisting that those making the allegations should provide evidence to support them.
