Senate President Godswill Akpabio has expressed deep shock over the death of former Delta State Governor, Dr Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, describing his passing as a painful loss to Nigeria and the Niger Delta region.
Uduaghan died on Monday, October 19, 2026, at the age of 71, just three days before his 72nd birthday, according to his family.
In a condolence message issued on Tuesday through his Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom, Akpabio said the late former governor was a distinguished medical doctor and statesman who dedicated his life to public service.
Akpabio, who governed Akwa Ibom State during part of Uduaghan’s tenure in Delta, recalled the contributions the former governor made to infrastructure, healthcare delivery and human capital development.
He described Uduaghan as a bridge-builder who maintained relationships across ethnic and political divides, noting that his leadership extended beyond his immediate community.
According to the Senate President, Uduaghan’s years in office represented an important period in Delta State’s infrastructural development, while his commitment to healthcare and the welfare of his people earned him respect.
Akpabio said the former governor’s contributions to democracy and national development would be remembered long after his death.
On behalf of the 10th Senate, he extended condolences to Uduaghan’s wife, Roli, his children and other members of the family, as well as the Delta State Government, the Itsekiri nation and the wider Niger Delta community.
He also prayed for strength and comfort for those mourning the former governor.
Uduaghan served as Delta State governor from 2007 to 2015, completing two terms in office. Before becoming governor, he served as Commissioner for Health between 1999 and 2003 and later as Secretary to the State Government from 2003 to 2007.
His death has prompted tributes from political leaders and public figures, with many reflecting on his years in government and his contributions to the development of Delta State.
