The Nigerian Senate has passed two amendment bills aimed at strengthening local manufacturing and processing industries while bringing the country’s procurement profession in line with evolving international standards.

The bills were approved during plenary on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, following a fresh review after President Bola Tinubu returned the proposed legislation to the National Assembly for reconsideration.

The bills are the Raw Materials Research and Development Council Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026, and the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply Management of Nigeria (Establishment) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026.

Both bills were sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, who represents Ekiti Central Senatorial District.

According to Bamidele, the National Assembly had previously passed the bills and forwarded them to the President for assent. However, the Federal Ministry of Justice identified issues requiring further legislative consideration, prompting the President to return them with observations.

A technical committee comprising representatives of both chambers of the National Assembly and legal drafting experts subsequently reviewed the concerns
