Nigeria has confirmed its first case of Ebola disease in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, prompting health authorities to intensify efforts to prevent further transmission.
The Federal Government announced the confirmation on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, following laboratory tests on a woman who recently arrived in Nigeria from Uganda. The patient is currently in isolation and receiving medical care at a private hospital in Abuja.
According to health officials, the woman began showing symptoms on 7 October and sought medical attention on 11 October. The circumstances surrounding her infection remain under investigation, including her travel and exposure history.
Authorities have identified 44 people who may have come into contact with the patient. The individuals, including healthcare workers, patients, caregivers and travel-related contacts, are being monitored as contact-tracing efforts continue.
The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), FCT health authorities and international health partners are coordinating the response.
Healthcare facilities across the country have also been urged to strengthen surveillance, promptly identify suspected cases, follow strict infection prevention measures and report any suspected infections to public health authorities.
Ebola can spread through direct contact with the blood or other bodily fluids of an infected person who is showing symptoms, as well as through contaminated materials. Symptoms may include fever, severe weakness, headache, vomiting and diarrhoea.
The latest development comes amid an ongoing outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, which has affected several African countries. Nigeria had previously experienced an Ebola outbreak in 2014, which it successfully contained through isolation, contact tracing and other public health measures.
Health authorities have urged Nigerians to remain calm, follow verified medical advice and cooperate with public health teams. Members of the public can contact the NCDC’s toll-free call centre on 6232 for information or to report a suspected case.
Investigations and contact tracing are continuing as the government works to contain the infection and prevent wider transmission.
