The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has reportedly intercepted 38,700 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly known as petrol, in Adamawa State as part of efforts to curb the illegal movement of petroleum products across Nigeria’s borders.

The operation forms part of the service’s ongoing campaign against fuel smuggling, which authorities say undermines the domestic economy and deprives the country of revenue.

Adamawa’s strategic location along Nigeria’s borders makes it a key area for anti-smuggling operations, particularly as security agencies intensify surveillance of routes allegedly used to transport petroleum products illegally into neighbouring countries.

Crackdown on Fuel Smuggling

The Customs Service has continued to deploy intelligence-led operations to intercept petroleum products suspected of being diverted from the domestic market for illegal export.

Such operations are intended to protect local fuel supplies, discourage illicit cross-border trade and ensure compliance with existing export restrictions.

The agency has repeatedly warned individuals and groups involved in petroleum smuggling to abandon the practice or face the consequences of the law.

Protecting Nigeria’s Economy

Illegal petroleum trade remains a concern for the authorities because it can disrupt legitimate distribution channels, weaken regulatory controls and contribute to revenue losses.

The Customs Service has maintained that it will continue working with other security agencies and border communities to identify smuggling routes and dismantle networks involved in the illegal movement of goods.

The latest reported seizure underscores the government’s continued efforts to strengthen border enforcement and prevent the unauthorised export of petroleum products.
