Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has promised to support the mother of Ifeanyi Nwolie, his supporter who was shot dead during a political activity in Enugu State.

Obi made the pledge on Thursday while attending Nwolie’s burial in Afa, Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, assuring the bereaved mother that she could count on him for continued support.

According to reports from the burial, Obi also pledged to sustain the monthly financial assistance Nwolie had been providing for his mother. He reportedly gave the family financial support covering 15 months, up to December 2027.

Nwolie was killed during a violent incident at an NDC political activity on October 10, 2026.

In a post on his X account, Obi disclosed that he arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja from the United Kingdom at about 5:30 a.m. on Thursday before boarding a 7 a.m. flight to Enugu for the funeral.

Speaking about his commitment to the deceased’s mother, Obi said God had given her another son in him who would continue to support her as Nwolie had done.

“My humble pledge to the mother is that God Almighty, whom it pleased to bring Ifeanyi home, has also given her another son in me to support her, as Ifeanyi used to,” he said.

The presidential candidate also used the occasion to condemn political violence, urging politicians across federal, state and local government levels to reject violence, ethnic divisions and religious intolerance ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He called on political parties and candidates to prioritise policies and programmes that would improve the lives of Nigerians, rather than engage in actions that threaten peace and democratic participation.

Obi stressed that Nigerians must be free to express their political preferences and participate in elections without intimidation or fear.

“The process through which we attain public office is more important than the office itself,” he said.

He further warned against undermining the rule of law, noting that disregard for legal institutions could plunge the country into disorder.

The former governor called for a Nigeria where human life is valued above political interests and citizens can exercise their democratic rights safely.

He concluded by reiterating his belief that “a new Nigeria is possible”.
